ARENA FOOTBALL
Introduction:
Thanks to the brilliance of Jim Foster, Arena football has reached the glory that it is basking in today. Jim was a former administrator of the National Football League and the United States Football League. The basic rules of the sport were conceptualized by Jim, at an indoor Soccer game in the year 1981, at the Madison Square Garden. It took five years for Jim to alter the rules and play the test games, till such time as it was felt ready to establish the Arena Football League in the year 1987. Arena Football League bred a minor league by the name af2, in the year 2000. Subsequent to 2000, many other people came forward and established their individual indoor football leagues. However, arena football is not technically played by these leagues. This is for the fact that Jim Foster obtained a patent in the year 1990, for the rules of Arena Football which was, originally obtained by Gridiron Enterprises.
Timing:
In case of out-of-bound plays, as well as sacks and incomplete passes, the clock stops but only for the end minute of each half. The warning duration is of only one minute in lieu of the three minute warning in the CFL and two minutes in the National Football League. It can also be due to the injuries, the penalties and the timeouts. With regards to the change in the ownership, the clock stops till such time, as the ball is set ready for playing. In case, the quarter finishes at the score of touchdown, an attempt of an untimed conversion is made. The duration of the halftime is about 15 minutes. The play clock continues for a period of 35 seconds and gets started at the finish of previous play.
Miscellaneous:
In the event of overtime, each team has one possession for scoring. After having one possession, if the particular team is ahead, that team is declared to be the winner. In the event of a tie, after each team having had a possession, the next team wins. The overtime period lasts for a full 15 minutes. It continues from where the former overtime period had stopped till such time as the breaking of a tie. |
